I cut my first story while volunteering for a local cable station just after graduating high school. My experience up to that point was working a camera a few times for one of the studio shows… but I wanted to focus on reporting. They gave me a story, sent me into the field with a camera crew and I went and covered the preparation for the opening of a new play. I came back to the studio later that night and asked if I could try putting the piece together—not having edited a day in my life. They put me in a room with giant editing decks, video scopes and monitors and gave me five minutes of instruction on how to command hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment.
It was a short piece, maybe only a couple of minutes in length, but it took me deep into the morning hours to finish. It was there in the dark, alone in that giant studio making error after error and grinding it out, that I realized I’d happily stay as long as it would take to get it done right. It was there that I knew I’d found my calling, a passion that would shape every step of my life from that moment on. That passion is still here today, ready to be put into every project that comes my way.
